Hong Kong Vicious Dog Kills Two Small Dogs in a Row; Eyewitness Kneels and Cries Bitterly

A terrifying "dog bites dog" incident occurred in Hong Kong, where a large dog killed two small dogs in the street, triggering public concern.

According to reports from Hong Kong media, the incident happened in Yuen Long. At around 3 p.m., two small dogs were attacked and killed within half an hour—a 17-year-old poodle and a 4-year-old Bichon Frise, both weighing around 5 kilograms. The poodle was attacked near the taxi stand at YOHO MALL 1. After the incident, the owner sent it to a nearby veterinary clinic for emergency treatment, but sadly, it did not survive. The Bichon Frise was attacked near the mall park and was pronounced dead at the scene.

● Tracing the Large Dog’s Owner

The attacking dog is believed to be a mixed breed weighing about 60 kilograms, wearing a collar, but its owner was nowhere to be found after the incident. The dog was later taken away by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD), but it remained dangerous and agitated. The police are awaiting information on whether the dog is microchipped to help trace its owner.

The Bichon Frise’s owner uploaded the last video of ‘Vivi’ before the incident, saying ‘She was our family’s little angel. I really want to hug her and kiss her again. I can’t believe she left us so suddenly.’
From video clips circulating online, the big dog is seen biting down hard on a white small dog and refusing to let go, while a nearby man breaks down, kneeling and crying bitterly. Several people tried to pull the large dog away without success. Shortly after, the dog let go, revealing the small dog bleeding profusely with bite wounds. Another video shows the large dog later walking to the roadside, approached by several police officers armed with shields and barriers trying to subdue it, creating a shocking and distressing scene.

On the Mainland Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, a tourist who claimed to have assisted in restraining the dog posted about the incident. He stated that he was passing by with his cousins when he saw the large dog biting the small dog and immediately stepped forward with his cousin to try to intervene. Sadly, the small dog still died. He said, the big dog "was very strong and especially smelly." He added, "When I was pulling it, I was really worried it might turn around and bite me too."

A photo circulating online shows a large dog lying outside the entrance of YOHO Mall in Yuen Long on the 10th of last month, with no owner in sight, believed to be the same dog involved in this incident.
Photos taken at the scene show that after the incident the large dog walked onto the road, with a large number of police officers chasing after it, holding shields and barriers, trying to control the dog.

According to police reports, the small dog shown in the video above was the poodle. The police also received a report from a woman who brought her Bichon Frise to play in Bang Bang Tang Park nearby when the dog was suddenly attacked and bitten in the neck by the large dog. The beloved pet collapsed and died instantly.

● Bichon Frise Owner: Deeply Grieved, Sleepless Nights

The owner of the Bichon Frise “Vivi” posted on social media on the 18th to remember his pet, stating that he and his family were “deeply grieved and couldn’t sleep all night,” describing “Vivi as a particularly well-behaved and docile little dog and our family’s little angel.”

The owner recalled the incident, saying that he took Vivi out as usual that day, when suddenly a “dog as tall as half a person” rushed out and bit Vivi on the neck. He said he tried every means to stop the big dog, but “I could only watch helplessly as my little dog lost her life.”

● “Helplessly watched my little dog lose her life”

The owner continued, he tried “kicking the big dog, spraying its nose with water, luring it with treats, but it just wouldn’t let go of Vivi.” He could only scream for help, and thankfully bystanders tried to help. “But facing a dog weighing dozens of pounds that locked on so tightly, no one could do much. I could only watch helplessly as my little dog lost her life.” He added that even when Vivi was clearly dead, the large dog continued to guard her body until the police arrived and subdued the dog, after which the owner could collect the remains.

The owner stated that only afterwards did he learn the same large dog had killed another small dog, but “throughout the entire ordeal, the big dog's owner never appeared.”

The owner said: “Facing this sudden tragedy, my family and I are deeply grieved and cannot sleep at night. Vivi was a particularly well-behaved and docile little dog, our family’s little angel. I so badly want to hold her and kiss her again. I can’t believe she left us so suddenly...”

● What Does a Lawyer Say?

Barrister Luk Wai-hung told "HK01" in a phone interview that under current law, if one dog kills another, it does not immediately constitute a criminal offense. However, he emphasized that a dog owner who fails to properly control their dog in a public place violates the “Dangerous Dogs Regulation.” Also, from a legal perspective, dogs are considered personal property of their owners. If a dog is injured or killed, it is deemed damage to property, and the affected dog owner is entitled to seek civil compensation from the other owner.
