The United States Coast Guard issued a statement on the 5th, saying that a boat capsized near San Diego, California, resulting in at least 3 deaths and 7 missing.
The statement said that the Coast Guard is currently searching in the waters near Del Mar, San Diego County, for 7 missing persons, including 2 children.
The San Diego County police indicated that multiple law enforcement agencies and the Coast Guard rushed to the scene around 6:30 am local time after receiving a report, finding 3 deceased bodies and 4 survivors. The survivors have been sent to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Local media reported that the incident is suspected to be illegal smuggling, but this has not been officially confirmed.
The San Diego waters, located near the US-Mexico border, often see smugglers attempting to enter the United States using small boats. In March 2023, a smuggling boat capsized in the fog, resulting in 8 deaths.
