Chief Minister: Akmal’s Resignation Has No Effect on State Government’s Stable Operations

Published at Jan 19, 2026 04:01 pm
Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf stated that the resignation of UMNO Youth Chief Datuk Akmal from his position as State Executive Councillor will not affect the stability or administrative operations of the state government.

He said that as of 10am today, he had yet to receive Akmal’s official resignation letter. Akmal currently serves as the State Executive Councillor for Rural Development, Agriculture, and Food Security, and is also the state assemblyman for Merlimau.

Ab Rauf bluntly said: “The state government will continue to function as usual. His action is like throwing a handful of salt into the sea—it does not change the saltiness of the water.”

He pointed out that as the leader of the state government, he always upholds team spirit, and emphasized that he has already been assured by the party president that there will be no so-called ‘party hopping’ situations during this term of the state government.

Ab Rauf made these remarks to the media after attending the 2026 Chinese New Year gathering at the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) in Ayer Keroh today, themed ‘Year of Implementation: Sustainable Indicators, Fulfilling the Mission, Strengthening Performance.’

Talking about Akmal’s stance, Ab Rauf said that the Melaka state government was not formed based on a forced alliance, but rather as a complementary partner to the federal government.

“Whatever action Akmal decides to take is his personal choice. In my opinion, this is more of a personal stance rather than a decision at the state government level. As the National UMNO Youth Chief, his struggle is more closely aligned to the voices of the youth.”

He added that as of 10am today, he had still not received any formal resignation letter from Akmal. Any decision will only be made after a comprehensive review.

“If I receive a resignation letter, I will conduct study and evaluation before deciding whether or not to accept his request to resign as State Executive Councillor.”

He pointed out that even if a resignation letter is submitted today, tomorrow or in the near future, the related procedure still requires submission to the Melaka Governor, Tun Mohd Ali, as the appointment authority for Executive Councillors lies in the hands of the state governor.

“For now, we will observe the development of the situation and make appropriate announcements at the right time.”
