(Kuching, 30th) Sarawak is currently making steady progress towards achieving the goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, with a robust and progressive legal framework introduced for carbon management and climate change.
Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari, the Premier of Sarawak, stated that clear state policies and regulations are an important foundation for establishing a competitive carbon market.
“In terms of carbon management and policy, Sarawak has established a progressive and strong legal framework. We understand that a clear regulatory environment is the foundation of any successful carbon market.”
He said this during his speech at the opening ceremony of the 2025 Asia Carbon Conference (ACC) held yesterday at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching. The conference also gathered various stakeholders from both domestic and international spheres.
Abang Johari noted that the 2023 Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Environment Regulations will come into effect on March 1, 2024, marking a critical step forward in Sarawak's climate governance.
“These important laws require specific economic sectors to declare their greenhouse gas emission levels, allowing the Sarawak government to regulate and gradually reduce emissions, laying out a clear path for Sarawak towards the 2050 net zero emissions goal.”
He also revealed that the Sarawak government is finalizing the Sarawak Carbon Plan to comprehensively outline the implementation framework for carbon market investment while developing an orderly and friendly carbon market.
Moreover, Sarawak emphasizes the importance of policy coordination between the federal and Sarawak governments in climate governance and carbon market development.
