Trump: Maintain 25% Tariffs on Japan or Soon Reach Deal with India

On the 16th, US President Trump indicated that the United States would maintain the 25% tariffs imposed on Japanese goods.

He made this statement while meeting with Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman at the White House.

He believes that with regard to Japan, the United States will likely stick to the tariff letter.

Trump had already sent a letter to Japan on the 7th of this month, stating that a 25% tariff would be imposed on Japanese goods starting August 1. Although Japan is still in contact and negotiation with the United States, Trump stated frankly that it is unlikely for the two sides to reach a comprehensive agreement.

Trump also said: “We are about to announce several fairly good agreements.”

He reiterated that an agreement with India could be reached soon, and that the possibility is quite high.

He also pointed out that tariff letters would be sent directly to over 150 other countries that have not negotiated with the United States.

Currently, India faces a 26% tariff. An Indian delegation has already arrived in Washington to start negotiations.

On the other hand, during a media interview on the 16th, Trump stated that the United States and India are very close to reaching a trade agreement, and an agreement with the European Union is also possible; as for other smaller countries, he is likely to impose a 10% to 15% tariff.
