Tun Mahathir's Chinese Signboard Remarks: Chiew Choon Man - Dividing a Multicultural Society

(MIRI 19th) Miri Member of Parliament Chiew Choon Man expressed his views on Tun Mahathir's recent remarks about the use of Chinese signboards in Kuala Lumpur shopping centers, as his comments could potentially continue a divisive discourse that undermines the multicultural fabric of our beloved Malaysia.

He said Mahathir's assertion that the prevalence of Chinese signboards indicates a weakening of Malaysian identity distorts the reality of our multicultural society and ignores the significant contributions that all ethnic groups make to the richness of our national identity.

"Malaysia is a vibrant nation built upon a rich tapestry of cultures and languages. The existence of Chinese signboards reflects our multicultural society, where various ethnic groups coexist and contribute significantly to the country's economic and cultural landscape. Chinese businesses play an essential role in Malaysia's economic framework, and the visibility of Chinese signboards highlights the vitality and success of these enterprises, showcasing their indispensable role in our economy rather than posing a threat to our identity."

He pointed out that while the Malay language is our national language, the use of multiple languages in public spaces is a hallmark of a globalized society. Just as English is prevalent in many countries, we should embrace and celebrate the multilingual nature of our community and view it as an asset.

He also said that promoting unity rather than division is crucial, and we should not be sowing discord by emphasizing differences but should celebrate our diversity and strive to foster understanding and respect among all Malaysians. By embracing our different backgrounds, we can build a more cohesive society.

"Mahathir's portrayal of Malaysia as 'part of China' fuels unfounded fears and only serves to alienate us from one another. We must collectively reject such notions and focus on the common values that unite us as Malaysians."

Chiew Choon Man urged all Malaysians to reflect on the importance of inclusivity and oppose any rhetoric that seeks to divide our society. Now is the time to embrace our diversity as a source of strength and work together towards building a more united and harmonious Malaysia. Let us create a future where every culture is respected and celebrated, contributing to the vibrant landscape of our nation.
