Chen Sheng Maintains His ‘Mischievous Old Child’ Spirit—Witty Remarks Bring Down the House

At 67 years old, Chen Sheng still showcases his free-spirited, fun-loving, and mischievous “old child” persona at his concerts. On stage, he frequently dances, sways his hips, and makes all sorts of goofy moves in time with the music. He occasionally jokes around and interacts humorously with guests and band members, singing while joking and chatting with fans, turning the live atmosphere into a relaxed and joyful reunion of old friends.

On the night of the 2nd, Chen Sheng brought his “Egg on an Outing” 2026 tour – “Outing First Stop – Malaysia Station” to Zepp Kuala Lumpur, returning to Malaysia for a show after three years away. He performed more than 20 classic hits in succession, including “June,” “I Like Eloping and Myself,” “Kite,” “However,” “I Won’t Let You Be Lonely Anymore,” and “Let Sadness Stay With Me,” among others.

At the opening, Chen Sheng kicked things off with “Youth Like the Wind” and “In a Foreign Land,” followed by several more songs. He remained as laid-back as ever, first teasing the band: “If the singing is good, credit goes to me; if not, it’s on you all.” When performing “I Won’t Let You Be Lonely Anymore,” he even improvised the lyrics to “someone’s wearing slippers,” which sparked laughter throughout the venue.

Reappearing in a white and green striped suit and hat, fans shouted “so handsome!” from below the stage, but he couldn’t resist poking fun at himself: “Nonsense, I’m so tanned.” He then performed songs including “Don’t Make Me Cry,” “Tears at Twenty,” “Crowded Band,” and “Love-Hate Song.” When he was especially happy, he simply sat on the edge of the stage or even half-lay down to continue singing, fully displaying his unrestrained and authentic character.

When it came to “Let Sadness Stay With Me,” fans started urging him to come off stage, which he did, going into the audience to interact closely. As excited fans surged forward, he laughingly called for a halt: “Alright, if you don’t sit down, then just stand there, ready—one, two, three, freeze!” He then coaxed: “Be good, sit back down. When you’re away from home, how can you not bow your head? Be good, everyone, sit down.” Once fans returned to their seats, he continued with the song, and when he finished he stomped his feet, boasting: “How can it sound so good, it’s so annoying. I’m good-looking and write songs—how vexing!”

At one point, a female fan shouted, “Chen Sheng, I love you!” He immediately quipped: “Hey, I’m married!” Later, another fan called out, “Brother Sheng, I love you,” and he quickly waved her off: “No no no no! I’ve heard that a lot, heard that a lot, no no no, let me just admire you instead.” His two witty retorts had the entire venue in stitches.

This time, Chen Sheng also brought his protégé, recent Golden Melody Award winner for Best Hokkien Female Singer PiA Wu Bei-ya, to perform in Malaysia. Together they sang “Opium Rose,” “Outside the Peony Pavilion,” “Tell Mom,” and “Beijing Night.” PiA also performed solo with Chen Sheng’s original Hokkien song “Innocent Youth Dream” as well as her own pieces, “Section 2 of Keelung Road” and “Watching You Live Like This.”

However, ever the impromptu performer, when singing “Outside the Peony Pavilion,” Chen Sheng suddenly changed up the singing style, then teasingly “blamed” PiA, saying: “Sis, you sang it wrong—you messed up my tempo, I wrote the song, Pops sings it how he wants, got it? Forty years in the showbiz, I don’t follow rules.” PiA could only smile wryly. When PiA asked the crowd if they knew who she was, fans shouted, “Golden Melody Award Best Hokkien Female Singer!” She grinned and replied, “Master taught me well.”

Near the end of the concert, when performing “The Last Tenderness,” Chen Sheng abruptly stopped after just two lines, putting his arm around the band member’s shoulder and asking, “Got another song?” He then switched to singing “South Wind,” leaving fans who’d been looking forward to the other song sighing with regret. Afterwards, he opened the floor for song requests—joking: “I’m not scared, I’ve got this thing (sheet music).” As the crowd called out songs, he couldn’t help laughing: “How fun is this! How’d it turn into a karaoke contest?” He finished with “Intersection,” and for the encore performed “Summer.” When he got to the lyrics “circling the fat on my belly,” he lifted his shirt to show his belly, fully displaying Chen Sheng’s carefree humor. The concert, full of surprises and laughter, ended to the fans’ reluctant farewells.
