(SBS News, 17th) The Industry and Business Ecosystem Division (IBE) under the Ministry of Finance and Economy, through its Weights and Measures Department (SDT), recently carried out mobile station verification services at three different locations, including Tamu Kianggeh, Serasa Market, and Gadong Market, registering a total of 173 weighing machines.
This mobile station verification service was conducted on May 9th, 17th, 21st, and 28th as part of an ongoing government measure.
The measure aims to adopt a customer-centric approach to protect consumer rights, encourage local businesses to increase transparency, and ensure compliance with the guidelines stipulated under Chapter 151 of the Weights and Measures Act 1983 and its regulations.
Traders and users of weighing machines for trade must comply with the provision of Section 3(2) of the Weights and Measures (Verification) Regulations 1994. The law stipulates that it is an offense for any person to use or possess any weight, measure, or weighing instrument that is not stamped according to the regulations for transactions.
The penalty for such offenses is a fine of 1000 or imprisonment for three months, or both.
Moreover, instruments used for weighing will be confiscated. Any contract, transaction, sale, or trade conducted with such unverified equipment is deemed invalid.
