(Miri, 26th) In response to yesterday's sudden flood in Miri, Miri MP Chiew Choon Man issued a statement today expressing deep concern and urging relevant departments to quickly take action to solve the drainage and flood prevention issues exposed during the city's development process. He emphasized that the rapid development of Miri must be synchronized with infrastructure upgrades to prevent similar disasters from recurring.
“Many drainage ditches are overwhelmed, and the old drainage system cannot cope with the rapidly growing catchment area, and the drainage facilities on some main roads urgently need upgrading,” said Chiew.
He listed the main causes of Miri's flooding as follows:
1. Low-lying areas prone to flooding: Villages near the river are subject to both tidal and heavy rain impacts.
2. Old drainage system: Unable to cope with the expansion of catchment areas, some areas only have a single main drainage ditch.
3. Lack of maintenance of drainage facilities: Severely blocked by weeds and silt, affecting drainage efficiency.
4. Insufficient community flood prevention facilities: Culvert and bridge designs are inadequate, and some road drainage systems are in disrepair.
Chiew stated that as the MP for Miri, he has repeatedly raised the issue of flood prevention in Miri in Parliament and urged relevant ministries to increase funding for upgrading Miri's drainage system and implementing flood prevention measures. He also promised to fully support the Miri City Council (MBM) in applying for federal funds and provide assistance during the application process.
He emphasized that he will continue to advocate for sustainable development in Miri in the future, including prioritizing infrastructure improvements and ensuring strict implementation of maintenance plans. He called on federal, state, and local authorities to work together to formulate effective flood management plans to protect the well-being of Miri residents.
Chiew urged all parties to act quickly to prevent future floods and mitigate their impact on the lives of Miri residents.
“Let us work together to ensure that Miri's development is accompanied by strong infrastructure to protect the community's safety and happiness.”
