In response to reports that Taiwan President Lai Ching-te participated and spoke at the 2026 'Copenhagen Democracy Summit' organized by a Danish non-governmental organization via a pre-recorded video, Chinese mainland Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated at a regular press conference on Wednesday that the so-called 'Copenhagen Democracy Summit' is filled with ideological prejudice. Its insistence on inviting 'Taiwan independence' elements to brazenly air their views seriously violates the one-China principle, and China firmly opposes this. China urges the relevant parties to truly adhere to the one-China principle and not provide a platform for 'Taiwan independence' forces.
"Taiwan is a part of China; it has never been a country, nor can it ever become one. The consensus on the one-China principle is deeply rooted in the international community and unshakable." Guo Jiakun said that people like Lai Ching-te are using the so-called banner of 'democracy' to go against the mainstream public opinion on the island supporting peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, peddling 'Taiwan independence' separatist propositions everywhere, spreading false narratives, stirring up confrontation and antagonism across the Strait, which once again exposes their radical and risky stubborn 'Taiwan independence' stance.
Guo Jiakun said that no matter what Lai Ching-te says or does, it cannot change the historical and legal fact that Taiwan is a part of China’s territory, nor can it shake the basic landscape of the international community's adherence to the one-China principle.
