Taiwanese singer Zheng Zhihua, who has had to use a wheelchair to get around after contracting polio at age two, posted on the 25th condemning the inhumanity of Shenzhen Airport in China, saying he could no longer tolerate it. He stated, “The driver operating the lift didn’t care about my safety at all, completely refused to raise the ramp, and just coldly watched as I rolled and crawled my way onto the plane.” His furious post led to a turning point: Zheng Zhihua said on Weibo that Shenzhen Airport had apologized to him, and that he basically would not pursue the matter any further.
Zheng Zhihua wrote: “Shenzhen Airport has already personally apologized to me, and I basically will not pursue the matter further. I believe this was just the poor conduct of one lift driver, not a problem with the entire airport. I only hope that, through this incident, Shenzhen Airport can optimize its services and assistance for people with disabilities. Shenzhen is a city I like, and its people are outstanding. I hope Shenzhen Airport can keep pace with the city’s quality.” Despite the swift response from the airport, some netizens responded sarcastically, “It takes a celebrity complaining on social media to prompt improvements—an ordinary person’s words wouldn’t matter,” “If a regular person complained, they probably wouldn’t bother handling it,” and “A celebrity’s voice gets dealt with quickly, but the voices of regular people just disappear.”
