(Portugal, 22nd) Following the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, Portugal has officially announced recognition of the State of Palestine.
According to Reuters, Portuguese Foreign Minister Rangel said Sunday (September 21) at the headquarters of the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations in New York: “Recognizing the State of Palestine is an expression of the basic, ongoing, and fundamental approach of Portuguese foreign policy.”
He also said: “Portugal maintains that the two-state solution is the only way to achieve a just and lasting peace... A ceasefire is urgently needed.”
He pointed out that Hamas “cannot have any form of control in Gaza or any area outside of Gaza,” and called for the release of all hostages.
Additionally, he stated that recognizing the State of Palestine “does not eliminate the humanitarian disaster in Gaza,” and condemned the famine conditions, destruction in Gaza, and “Israel’s expansion of settlements in the West Bank.”
The United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia also recognized the State of Palestine on Sunday. France, Belgium, and several other countries also plan to do so during the United Nations General Assembly this week.
To date, about 140 countries have recognized the State of Palestine, with the United Kingdom and Canada being the first G7 member states to do so.
