Khalil Fong's Artistic Assets Must Not Be Infringed—Strictly Prohibited from AI Training Use

Musical prodigy Khalil Fong passed away on February 21. On the 7th, his record company "FU Music" and his estate management jointly issued an official statement. In light of the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, they clearly declare that they "fully reserve all rights," strictly forbidding any unauthorized AI training or related development using Khalil Fong’s works and personal data.

Khalil Fong was passionately devoted to music during his lifetime; even while battling illness, he continuously composed. In his posthumous work "Dreamer," the slight flaws in his voice due to his illness are still audible. He once movingly stated: “I had already been ill for quite a while at that point, but in my mind, countless ideas kept churning. Later, I thought, in this era, everyone can accept AI singing, so I suppose no one would mind listening to a sick person sing, right?”

With the rapid advancement of AI technology, "FU Music" is working with the estate management to ensure Khalil Fong's artistic legacy is not violated and to safeguard the intellectual property rights of the creator. The official statement prohibits a range of uses that include Khalil Fong's recorded works, songwriting, audiovisual recordings, name, portrait, image, text, data, and metadata. Any form of copying, machine learning, web scraping, or AI system training is forbidden.

The document specifically cites relevant regulations from the EU Directive and the Hong Kong Copyright Ordinance, stressing that “all rights are reserved” within the scope permitted by law. This applies to all existing and future works of Khalil Fong—including those already publicly released. Industry insiders view this statement as an important example and line of defense for protecting music creators amidst the AI wave. Furthermore, the estate management makes it clear that any third party wishing to use Khalil Fong’s works for AI-related purposes must first apply via email and obtain written authorization, with approval and conditions subject to management’s discretion.
