Sammi Cheng Says She Goes All In On Family and Love; Dayo Wong Goes Shirtless in 'Night King', Smashes Records

Superstar Sammi Cheng and box office king Dayo Wong star in the Hong Kong Lunar New Year film Night King. The two play a divorced couple trying to make it in the nightlife scene. Sammi Cheng plays a nightclub owner, flaunting a sizzling style and commanding presence. She even risks her entire fortune to save the club. Has she ever gone 'all in' like that in real life? Sammi Cheng said: “Actually, I go all in whether it’s work or family. I think with family and love, you can’t just give fifty percent. Whether it’s people or things, I give one hundred percent.”

In the film, the two had a marriage but no children. Asked whether she has ever considered having kids, Sammi Cheng replied, “When I was younger there was a brief moment when I thought about it, but fortunately I didn’t make the wrong choice. Given my personality, if I had kids, it would be a disaster. I can't even take care of myself, and my current way of life suits me best.” As for Dayo Wong, who’s still unmarried, he joked, “If I had a son, I’d beat him to death, because as a guy, I know how mischievous boys are. If I had a daughter, I would spoil her to death.”

Additionally, Dayo Wong worked hard to build muscle for Night King, featuring several bed scenes and shirtless shots, often surrounded by beautiful women at the nightclub. He laughed and said, “There’s a Hong Kong actor called Lam Suet. Normally, when I wear clothes, I’ve actually had Lam Suet’s body shape underneath. You can imagine how much effort I put in this time. This is not one of the rare benefits of my film career—there simply won’t be any more like this in the future!” Next to him, Sammi Cheng offered plenty of emotional support and praised Dayo Wong: “That BODY is just mouthwatering, really not bad!”

Louis Cheung, who plays a wealthy heir in the film, had to slap Dayo Wong on screen. Louis Cheung said he felt a lot of pressure, given Dayo’s box office star status. “I couldn’t sleep well that night, it felt like I’d become an action star.” To his surprise, director Ricky Yu said, “Not hard enough, you should hit him even harder, best if you make his nose bleed!” Louise Wong, who plays a club hostess who is obedient, flirty, and a great drinker, said with a laugh that she’s very different from her character—she doesn’t flirt in real life, and she doesn’t drink at all. “If I actually drank during filming, I wouldn’t have been able to keep acting!”

Night King has been a box office phenomenon in Hong Kong, grossing over HK$55 million (about RM27.34 million), breaking the record for opening week box office for a local Hong Kong film, taking the top spot for opening day box office among Lunar New Year releases, and setting the record for the highest single-day box office for a Lunar New Year film in Hong Kong history.
