Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, while meeting the press on the spot together with French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné in Paris on the 4th local time, responded to a reporter’s question regarding China’s view on the Iran nuclear issue and the current Middle East situation. Wang Yi stated that the Iran nuclear issue could have become an example of resolving international disputes through dialogue and consultation, but is now triggering a new round of crisis in the Middle East.
Wang Yi said that although the world has heard the knock of peace, it ultimately failed to open the door to peace. China deeply regrets this and believes the lessons must be seriously examined.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Wang Yi said that China’s position on the Iran nuclear issue is clear and consistent. We take seriously the multiple public commitments made by Iran’s Supreme Leader that Iran will not develop nuclear weapons, and at the same time respect Iran’s right as a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons to peacefully use nuclear energy.
Wang Yi stated, “I would like to emphasize that the road to peace is right beneath our feet, and history will interrogate the sincerity of all parties.”
Wang Yi said, the recent military clashes between Israel and Iran should not be repeated. War cannot resolve the Iran nuclear issue, preemptive strikes clearly lack legitimacy, and the arbitrary use of force will only trigger larger conflicts and accumulate more hatred.
● Are Small and Medium-sized Countries Left at Others’ Mercy?
He also condemned the United States, stating that the US’s blatant bombing of a sovereign country’s nuclear facilities has created a vile precedent. If it leads to a nuclear disaster, the entire world will pay the price. The notion that “strength brings peace” is the logic of might. If right and wrong are judged only by strength, where are the rules? Where is justice? Strength cannot bring true peace, and is likely to open Pandora’s box. How should countries lacking strength, especially small and medium-sized countries, position themselves? Must they simply be served up on a platter, left to be carved up at will?
He stated that both China and France are permanent members of the UN Security Council and should uphold justice, take action, support the resolution of conflicts through dialogue and negotiation, and oppose any double standards. Positions and policies should be determined based on the rights and wrongs of issues themselves, and the United Nations and its Security Council should play their due role for peace. China is willing to work together with France to this end and make unremitting efforts.
