(Kuala Belait, 17th) Li Guiqiang, President of the Brunei Chung Cheng Hakka Association, said in his speech at the association’s 15th anniversary celebration and fundraising dinner for the purchase of the association’s premises that over the past fifteen years, the association has faced many challenges, but everyone worked together to overcome them. This achievement is due to the support and encouragement of fellow townspeople, and he hopes the association will do even better with everyone’s continued support.
“Looking back, after Chung Cheng Hakka Association of Brunei obtained government approval in 2010 and was established smoothly, we did our best to lay the foundation, almost starting from zero and working under tremendous challenges. We are very grateful for the support, guidance, and assistance from kind and charitable Hakka people, which enabled us to accomplish the plans for these fifteen years. The road ahead is also unpredictable. We must carefully plan long-term strategies, harness the Hakka 'cando' spirit, unite together, and move forward.”
“As Dr. Kuan Ying Choi, our former honorary advisor for life, said on the day of our founding, self-reliance and growth depend on everyone working together, only then can we succeed. Many respected elders and compatriots also offered wise words and support, giving us great confidence and encouragement, pushing us to achieve what we have today. Thank you all.”
He stated that every year, the association regularly organizes Lunar New Year lion dance fundraising events, a members’ general meeting and Lunar New Year gathering, Qingming memorial ceremonies, visits to nursing homes, attendance at memorials for veteran members who have passed away and presentation of welfare funds, as well as donations to schools, orphans, and charity funds. The association has also participated in the activities of numerous social organizations in the country and Hakka associations in multiple countries.
“In 2025, our association has also achieved a breakthrough in its operations by finally fulfilling the long-standing wish of owning our own premises. Over the past years, we have relied on donations and sponsorships from the Lunar New Year lion dance and other activities to cover association expenses, with no stable income. The board has been searching for a suitable property for a long time, with a plan to purchase a shop lot to use for association activities, and generate steady income through renting or running our own business, to support the association’s operation and activities and contribute to members’ welfare. The association completed all official procedures for purchasing the property on January 13th this year, and since February, the association property has begun to provide stable income. This morning, we also successfully held our association’s inauguration plaque ceremony, marking a historic moment and an important milestone for our association, inspiring us with even greater confidence to face the future.”
He stated that after purchasing the property, the association will continue to raise funds for the acquisition, and he expressed his highest respect and gratitude to the devoted compatriots who have helped raise funds for purchasing the association premises.
