The news of a woman in Hebei, China, suspected to have died as a result of domestic violence from her husband soared to the top of the Weibo trending list on Sunday night, drawing massive attention from netizens. Police have disclosed that both her husband and mother-in-law have been detained under criminal charges.
On Sunday (August 24) night, the Mengcun Public Security Bureau of Hebei issued a case report via its WeChat public account, stating that the previous Friday (22nd) they received a report of a criminal case in a residential community that resulted in the death of a 25-year-old female victim surnamed Liu. After responding to the call, police conducted on-site investigations and evidence collection, and arrested Liu’s husband, a 26-year-old male suspect surnamed Jin, along with his mother, a 48-year-old woman surnamed Zhang suspected of helping destroy or fabricate evidence, both of whom have now been placed under criminal detention.
According to the report, a forensic examination determined that Liu died of blunt force trauma causing cranial and brain injuries, and that she was not pregnant. Police are currently working together with women’s rights protection agencies to investigate allegations of domestic violence involving Liu.
This incident has attracted great attention from Chinese netizens, with related news even topping the Weibo trending list. Many netizens criticized, “This is murder, not just domestic violence!” There are also rumors circulating online that Jin worked at the Mengcun County Procuratorate.
In response, Sanxiang Metropolis Daily contacted the Mengcun County Procuratorate on Sunday afternoon (24th); staff said they were not aware of the specific situation and advised calling back during working hours to consult the relevant authorities.
The case summary stated that Jin had a history of long-term domestic violence, which resulted in Liu’s death.
Liu’s close friend Xiaofan (alias) said Liu and Jin were campus sweethearts, and that Liu even lowered her score to be admitted to Shijiazhuang Vocational College of Political Science and Law for Jin’s sake. "At first, when he hit her, she would tell her family. Later on, she stopped saying anything and kept it all to herself."
Xiaofan also mentioned that when Liu asked Jin for living expenses, she would be scolded; and if she spent too much, she would also be scolded.
Xiaofan stated that in early August, Liu applied for a job at a mantou (steamed bun) shop, earning 10 RMB per hour (about 5.86 ringgit), "But her husband wouldn't allow it, saying it was embarrassing for him."
According to Sanxiang Metropolis Daily, a circulating case summary showed that last Friday, Liu’s father rushed to the county hospital emergency room and found Liu’s face bruised and injured. Medical tests showed brain hemorrhaging, swelling, lung injuries, and a fractured waist—she showed no signs of life.
