Guided by Mentor Yang Yanyan - Yahui's Debut as a Frenzied Killer is the Most Thrilling

After 18 years in the industry, Yahui has successfully been nominated for "Best Supporting Actress" at the upcoming "Star Awards" for her role as "Yan Suxi" in "Virtual Love." In the drama, she is successful in her career but emotionally unstable, pushing Zong Zijie off a cliff because she cannot have him. Playing a murderer for the first time, she admits, "This can be said to be the most thrilling role I've ever played."
With eight "Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes" trophies on her shelf, Yahui has been nominated for the acting award five times, always coming up short. "I hope to win this time because I've been in the industry for so long. Also, it's my first time playing a killer; I never thought it would be so thrilling. It’s a role I’ve never played and have always wanted to challenge, a breakthrough for me. Although there are only two episodes, the experience felt as deep as shooting 20 episodes." Yahui also frequently praised the production team's unity. "Performing surrounded by positive energy was very enjoyable."
Successfully portraying the insane and complex character vividly, besides Yahui's own efforts, there was guidance from behind-the-scenes mentor, "Golden Horse Award winner" Yang Yanyan. Yahui revealed that she happened to meet Yang Yanyan while watching the movie "Dust to Dust" and learned that Yang has been teaching acting as a mentor, so Yahui asked for her advice.
"It was close to the start of shooting when I received the script. Given that it's a very complex character, I needed some insights to have different perspectives on the role. Sister Yanyan agreed, and a few days before I headed to Kuala Lumpur to shoot, she analyzed the script with me."
Since the character's mindset differs from normal people, Yang Yanyan taught Yahui to try entering a different space to interpret the character. "I thought this was a very fresh idea; every teacher’s sharing allows learning of different things."
A scene where Yan Suxi decides to give up her life for love, driving while recollecting and crying, left the deepest impression on Yahui. Having left Mediacorp at the end of February 2023, she recalled, "When I left Mediacorp, I happened to be driving too, and a flood of memories surged up, so I rolled down the window and cried. It was exactly like that scene, so I broke down during filming, returning to that painful state. The feeling of alternating between different worlds was an experience I had never had before."
Yahui said, after all, Mediacorp was her first job, from being clueless when she entered the industry to later gathering the courage to take a step out; at that time, it took time to adjust.
"Back when we entered the industry, people said acting requires life experience, but we were only in our 20s and didn't understand at all. Now I get it; without going through experiences, many inner emotions are hard to feel."
After regaining her freedom, last year she also participated in filming the drama "The Unbroken," and is currently busy with behind-the-scenes production. However, she admits her acting itch has returned, jokingly saying, "That itch for acting is quite severe; an old love is still the most beautiful."
