Claimed as the world’s first, China’s first-generation “Satellite Internet Firewall” security payload has been successfully launched. According to its developer, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, this achievement supports the mission of meeting national security needs and marks a historic step forward for China in the field of satellite internet security.
According to a post on the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications' news website last Friday (September 19), China launched three satellites into orbit on September 5, marking the formal entry of a prototype “Satellite Internet Firewall” security payload into space. “This marks a historic step forward for China in the field of satellite internet security, achieving for the first time a technological breakthrough in the coordinated protection of the physical and network layers of satellite internet, providing a solid technical foundation for the security assurance of China’s satellite internet.”
The article introduces that the “Satellite Internet Firewall” security payload was independently developed by the National Key Laboratory of Information Photonics and Optical Communications at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. It is the world’s first multidimensional integrated security payload focused on coordinated security protection of the physical and network layers. This payload integrates multidimensional rule engines, AI-based anomaly behavior detection, onboard active inspection, large-model autonomous decision-making, and intelligent honeypots, among other core technologies.
It is explained that, targeting the “first line of defense” security scenario for satellite-to-ground and inter-satellite links, this payload provides onboard computing power and a real-time defense strategy orchestration environment, constructing an on-orbit firewall barrier for satellite-to-ground communications and inter-satellite routing. When facing sudden high concurrent traffic, the payload can steadily identify risks, ensuring protection for critical service communications. It also integrates over 70,000 high-quality threat detection rules, enabling satellites to both “see” and “block” cyberattacks.
The article states that this payload is also the first to complete a prototype verification of an onboard network firewall, making China the first to possess a fledgling satellite internet firewall, marking a key step forward in the direction of onboard network protection.
The article concludes: “The successful launch of the Satellite Internet Firewall security payload adheres to the mission of serving national needs, aiming at the international frontier, focusing on scientific and technological innovation, supporting major scientific and technological projects and national security needs, and has provided a strong scientific and technological support for the future construction of the global satellite internet security system and national space network security.”
