Four-Wheel Drive Vehicle Loses Control, Crosses Lane and Collides with Sedan: 1 Dead, 4 Injured

(Miri, 3rd) — A fatal traffic accident occurred on the Miri Bypass early this morning. A four-wheel drive vehicle is suspected of losing control and veering into the opposite lane, crashing head-on into a sedan, resulting in one person dying at the scene and four others being sent to the hospital for treatment.

This fatal accident occurred at around 2am near the traffic lights on the Miri Bypass, involving a Ford Kuga four-wheel drive vehicle and a Perodua Viva sedan.

According to preliminary police investigations, the four-wheel drive, driven by a 25-year-old local man, was heading from Permyjaya towards Kampung Tunku when it apparently lost control and crossed into the oncoming lane.

At that time, a sedan driven by a 39-year-old local man, carrying three passengers, was passing through the scene and, unable to avoid the collision in time, struck the left side of the four-wheel drive.

The accident caused the 43-year-old local male front seat passenger of the sedan to die at the scene due to severe injuries. The sedan’s driver and the other two male passengers, aged 19 and 20, were injured and have been sent to Miri Hospital for treatment.

Additionally, the four-wheel drive’s driver also suffered multiple injuries and was likewise sent to the hospital emergency department for treatment.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Center stated that after receiving the alert at 12:17am, it dispatched eight personnel from Lopeng Fire Station to the scene, along with one fire truck and one Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) vehicle.

When the rescue team arrived, all the injured had already been extricated by the public and related units. Two injured persons were sent to the hospital by Ministry of Health ambulances, while another two were sent by the Civil Defense Force. The deceased’s remains were handled by the police.

Since all injured persons had already been removed from the vehicles, firefighters did not carry out rescue operations and only assisted in cleaning spilled oil on the road and collecting information at the scene.

The police are currently investigating the case under Section 41(1) of the 1987 Road Transport Act and are urging anyone with information to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Mohd Faizul Bin Ab. Rahim at 014-8582582 or 085-430479, or provide information at the nearest police station.

The police also reminded road users to always drive with caution and obey traffic rules to avoid endangering their own safety and the safety of others.
