Chinese actress Yao Chen recently posted on Weibo, highly praising the film "The Mother From Prison" as the bravest performance she's ever seen. She described the main character as someone who rose from the ashes like a ray of light, and urged fans to support the movie in theaters. The film's official account subsequently reposted her message in gratitude. However, just a week later, the situation turned into a controversy. According to reports, netizens unearthed a ruling from the Shaanxi Provincial High People's Court regarding a criminal case. They discovered that the movie, adapted from this case, contained serious discrepancies between its promotional narrative and the judicial determination, pointing out that the filmmakers had packaged a "deliberate injury causing death case" as an "accidental killing of her husband while resisting domestic violence."
The related case occurred in April 2009, involving a woman who, after a quarrel with her husband over domestic trivialities, stabbed him in the chest with a fruit knife. This caused a rupture of his aortic root, resulting in his death. The woman was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and the film company "took the wrong direction" when bringing the case to the big screen. After learning the truth, Yao Chen deleted her relevant post, and the film company simultaneously deleted their interactive content as well. Zhao Xiaohong, the film's lead actress, also had her social media account suspended. The incident escalated, and by the evening of the 18th, "The Mother From Prison" announced its withdrawal from cinemas due to public pressure, with pre-sale box office earnings reaching only 44,000 RMB (around 25,000 MYR).
