Fan Bingbing's New Film Unveiled: Aiming Again for Best Actress

Published at Jun 09, 2026 05:10 pm
In recent years, Chinese actress Fan Bingbing has been actively expanding into overseas markets. Last year, she quietly took on an art film, performing alongside several renowned Japanese actors. The film is expected to premiere this year and compete at major film festivals. As the lead actress, Fan Bingbing is seen as a strong contender for international best actress honors.

Fan Bingbing was previously blacklisted from the domestic entertainment industry due to a tax evasion scandal, and her ban has yet to be lifted. In past interviews, she frankly admitted feeling disheartened at the time, even contemplating retirement. However, she later starred in the Malaysian film "Green Mother," winning numerous awards that helped her regain her courage and carry on. Last year, she quietly took on another project: "Diary of a Mad Old Man," directed by Chinese-American director Wayne Wang.

Reportedly, filming for "Diary" wrapped up in Japan last September, but the project remained shrouded in secrecy until recently, when some stills were finally released. The film is adapted from the last novel by renowned Japanese writer Junichiro Tanizaki. It explores themes of sex, love, emotion, beliefs, and self from the perspective of an elderly man in the final stage of life. The story centers on an ailing old man, whose life is rekindled after meeting his caregiver—a young woman. He develops a fascination and fetish for her feet. With its unique subject matter, the film appears poised to impact international festival circuits, making it unsurprising that Fan Bingbing might have her eyes set on the best actress crown.

This time, Fan Bingbing shares the screen with acclaimed Japanese actors Masaya Nakagawa, Yuki Kudō, and Takumi Saitoh, making fans eagerly anticipate the result. In a recent interview, she revealed that post-production work on the film has been completed, and she hopes it will be released to audiences this year. She also mentioned that Wayne Wang has historically set high standards for editing, often requiring multiple revisions, but during the creative process of "Diary," he greatly enjoyed himself and is reportedly quite satisfied with the final product. #
