(Kuala Belait, 28th) Huang Liming, President of the Kuala Belait Fuzhou Association, in his recent speech at an event, quoted the Eastern Jin dynasty litterateur Li Mi's 'Chen Qing Biao' to encourage everyone to cherish family bonds, value filial piety, and emphasized that fathers play a key role in family harmony and the prosperity of the clan.
Huang Liming stated that 'Chen Qing Biao' is a renowned lyrical masterpiece in Chinese classical literature. Because Li Mi's grandmother was elderly and often ill, he submitted a memorial to Emperor Wu of Jin declining the imperial summons, expressing his heartfelt wish to 'fulfill filial piety first, then serve loyalty,' caught between the conflict of loyalty and filial duty. The line, 'Without my grandmother, I would not be here today; without me, my grandmother would have no one to rely on in her remaining years,' poignantly expresses the genuine feelings of mutual dependence and care between grandparent and grandchild.
He said, Li Mi also expressed his wish to care for his grandmother until the end of her life with the phrase 'The crow’s private affection, may I beg to care for her till her end,' using the allusion of the 'crow feeding its mother' to illustrate the preciousness of filial love. It is said that Emperor Wu of Jin was deeply moved after reading it; not only did he not punish Li Mi, but he also granted his wish to care for his grandmother. Huang Liming pointed out that this filial devotion is still worth learning from today.
Talking about family relationships, Huang Liming said that many families display calligraphy of 'Harmony in the family brings prosperity,' but the spirit it embodies is not only family harmony, but also the close ties between parental responsibility, marital relationships, and children’s growth. He quoted a relevant saying: “If the father is loving, the mother will be respectful; if the mother is respectful, the children will be secure; if the children are secure, the family will be harmonious; with family harmony, all endeavors will prosper.” This means that if the father is responsible and loving, the mother can feel at ease and composed, the children can grow up in a stable environment, and the family will naturally be happy and prosperous.
