Ukrainian President Zelensky said in a media interview on the 9th that after multiple rounds of negotiation, the Russia-Ukraine 'peace plan' previously proposed by the US has been split into three documents.
He hopes to submit this updated version to the US side on the 10th.
He said that the initial 28-point 'peace plan' has now been split into three documents: a 20-point framework agreement, a US-Europe security guarantee document for Ukraine, and a document on Ukraine's post-war reconstruction.
Ukraine willing to hold elections in 60 to 90 days
Zelensky pointed out that if the US and Europe provide assistance and jointly ensure election security, Ukraine is ready to hold elections within 60 to 90 days, saying, "I personally am willing to promote this matter."
Ukrainian law prohibits holding elections during wartime. The presidential election was originally scheduled for March 2024, but ever since Russia launched its special military operation in February 2022, Ukraine has entered and repeatedly extended a state of war.
In addition, Zelensky pointed out that the bilateral security guarantees currently being discussed between Ukraine and the US are "similar" to Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty regarding collective defense. In the coming days or weeks, Ukraine will be able to learn in detail about the security guarantees the US can provide.
He admitted that while Ukraine very much wants to join NATO, "neither the US nor several other countries" currently want Ukraine to join NATO. Russia will never agree to Ukraine joining NATO.
Meeting with the Pope
On the other hand, Zelensky met with Pope Leo XIV on the 9th at the Pope's summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, south of Rome.
The Pope emphasized that dialogue must continue in order to achieve a "just and lasting peace."
