A 71-year-old mother, worried that her children would go hungry during a five-hour flight, personally made sandwiches on the plane, which sparked polarized reactions.
According to the Daily Mail, 70-year-old Shirley Murphy from Morgan, Utah, USA, was concerned her children might get hungry on the flight home, so she hand-made sandwiches at 30,000 feet in the air.
According to a video posted by her 48-year-old daughter, Eliza DePasquale, on social media, Murphy can be seen spreading out five baguettes on the tray table and generously stuffing them with slices of meat, cheese, onions, pickles, lettuce, and mayonnaise, then distributing the homemade sandwiches to her family.
While some netizens found this act of motherly love heartwarming, it also sparked polarized opinions.
Many netizens were touched by this display of maternal love, and some commented that this lady had basically brought a sandwich shop onto the plane.
However, some netizens said: "With so many people in a confined space, germs are everywhere… I wouldn’t make sandwiches on a plane."
Other passengers complained about the smell: "Bringing onions on a plane is horrible, the odor is too strong and disturbs others."
Some netizens suggested, "You should prepare dry sandwiches at home and only bring small packs of mayonnaise on board, instead of assembling sandwiches on the plane."
According to regulations from the US Transportation Security Administration, apart from alcohol, water, and other liquids, most foods can be taken as carry-ons. Sandwich ingredients such as bread and cheese are all permitted, and even items like meat sauce and honey are allowed through security as long as they are under 3.4 ounces (about 100 milliliters).
