(Miri, 11th) The Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, today inspected the Miri Sungai Tujoh checkpoint upgrading project.
In a press conference, Lee Kim Shin stated that last year, the number of people recorded by the Immigration Department had increased compared to the year before, rising from 1,796,757 in 2023 to 2,524,937 last year.
"With the approaching Chinese New Year, additional counters will be set up to facilitate faster clearance for the public. To address the congestion issues at the checkpoint, the Sarawak branch of the Malaysian Immigration Department has deployed a rapid response team, keeping immigration officers on standby to resolve issues promptly."
He also mentioned that the bidding for the expansion project was completed in December of last year, and it is currently under evaluation.
"The Sungai Tujoh checkpoint is a major gateway for Sarawak, and long-term plans must be adopted to improve existing facilities to accommodate the increasing future traffic."
Lee Kim Shin also hopes that the federal government can quickly approve the funding for the checkpoint's long-term plans.
