Zhang Yimou Broke Down in Tears After Breaking Up with Gong Li

Hong Kong film tycoon Charles Heung's wife, Tiffany Chen (known as "Mrs. Heung"), has recently become active in social media, frequently sharing little-known stories from the entertainment industry. Recently, she discussed the past golden couple romance between famed director Zhang Yimou and actress Gong Li, and rarely revealed the inside story behind their breakup. She stated bluntly that although the public speculated their split was due to personality clashes or infidelity, the real reason was that “their fundamental attitudes towards marriage were at odds.”
Mrs. Heung recalled that, at nearly 30 years old, Gong Li was longing for marriage and hoped Zhang Yimou would make their relationship official, but she never received a proposal. She revealed that Gong Li once tearfully confided to her: “I’m 29, almost 30, and he still doesn’t want to marry me. Are we over?” Meanwhile, Zhang Yimou believed that “two people in love don’t need a marriage certificate,” and since he spent six or seven years handling a previous divorce, he remained resistant to marriage. In the end, the long-term relationship ended, and businessman Huang Hexiang, who had been actively pursuing Gong Li, became her first husband.
Mrs. Heung admitted that when Zhang Yimou learned that Gong Li had found someone new, he was so distraught that he broke down in tears, even calling to sob while working on post-production in Japan. Upon hearing this, she and Charles Heung immediately flew over to comfort him: “Seeing such a talented man cry, I really couldn’t bear it.” Years later, Mrs. Heung even tried to arrange a reunion between the two, but ultimately, they each went their separate ways and started their own families.
