Smugglers attempted to hide duty-unpaid cigarettes within shipments of instant noodles sent to Singapore, but were ultimately foiled by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA), who successfully seized more than 9,300 sticks of duty-unpaid cigarettes.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, the ICA stated that its officers stationed at Changi Airfreight Centre intercepted a consignment declared as containing "instant noodles" on the 12th of this month, following a tip-off, and proceeded with further inspection.
Through X-ray scans, officers noticed irregularities in the internal structure of the goods. Upon opening the boxes, they discovered a large number of duty-unpaid cigarettes hidden among the instant noodles, amounting to over 9,300 sticks in total.
The authorities added that the case has been referred to Singapore Customs for further investigation.
