Fire Breaks Out in Residential Building in Shantou, Guangdong, Death Toll Rises to 12

A residential building in Shantou, Guangdong, China caught fire on the night of the 9th, resulting in 12 deaths. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

According to a Xinhua News Agency report, on the early morning of the 10th, the Chaonan District Fire and Rescue Brigade of Shantou City, Guangdong Province issued a bulletin stating that at 9:20 p.m. on the 9th, a sudden fire broke out in a residential building in the district, resulting in 8 deaths and 4 injuries. By noon, the death toll in the incident had risen to 12.

The bulletin stated that the fire department arrived at the scene for rescue, and by 10:03 p.m. the open flames had been extinguished.

According to a preliminary inspection, the building where the fire occurred was a self-built four-story reinforced concrete structure, with about 150 square meters affected by the fire. The fire on the night of the 9th resulted in 8 deaths at the scene and 4 injured sent to hospital for emergency treatment. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated and follow-up arrangements are being carried out in an orderly manner.

Family Members: The Victims Were All Family

According to Jiemian News, the incident took place at Yufeng Hardware & Electrical Appliance Store in Chaonan District. Business registration information shows that the store was established in 2010, operated by Wu Moumou, and mainly sells home appliances, mechanical and electrical products, and hardware tools.

Wu Moumou's daughter, in an interview, said that all the victims were her family members, including her father, mother, grandmother, as well as her younger brother and his children, "all of them are gone." She also revealed that at the time of the incident her older brother was not at home, and only her sister-in-law managed to escape. Her parents, grandmother, and others were living on the 3rd and 4th floors during the fire. "I don't know why they didn't manage to escape." She is also unclear about the cause of the fire and stated that the relevant authorities are investigating.
