(China, 13th) The Western Xia Mausoleum has been officially included in the World Heritage List. Rao Quan, Vice Minister of China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Director of the National Cultural Heritage Administration, said that the Western Xia Mausoleum holds an irreplaceable position in the history of world civilization.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Rao Quan stated that the Song-Liao-Xia-Jin period was an important developmental stage in the history of China as a unified multi-ethnic country, and the Western Xia culture is an important component of the multi-faceted unity of Chinese civilization.
He said that the Western Xia Mausoleum is the largest, highest-ranked, and best-preserved archaeological site left by Western Xia, directly providing irreplaceable evidence for the Western Xia dynasty— which lasted for nearly 200 years in Chinese history— and its imperial lineage. It also demonstrates the role of the Western Xia dynasty as a central hub on the Silk Road.
Rao Quan said that the authentic and well-preserved Western Xia Mausoleum provides important evidence for the formation process of the unified, multi-ethnic character of Chinese civilization and its pluralistic unity, and that it holds an indispensable and important status in world civilization history.
Rao Quan stated that through the application for World Cultural Heritage status, the historical and cultural value of Chinese civilization and the spiritual pursuits of the Chinese nation have been deeply interpreted, further demonstrating the remarkable continuity, creativity, unity, inclusiveness, and peacefulness of Chinese civilization.
The Western Xia Mausoleum is the cemetery site group of the Western Xia Dynasty (1038—1227), located in Yinchuan, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.
On Friday, UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee, meeting in Paris, France, reviewed nine heritage nomination projects. Successful projects that passed the review that day included China’s nominated Western Xia Mausoleum and Malaysia’s Selangor State Forest Park.
