This November, due to heavy rainfall brought by typhoons, many regions in China suffered disasters, accompanied by varying degrees of snow disasters and floods, endangering people’s lives and property. According to official statistics, the damage for November amounted to 760 million yuan (465 million ringgit), with 486,000 people affected.
According to a report by Jiemian News, the Office of the National Disaster Reduction Committee and the Ministry of Emergency Management of China recently released the "Situation of Natural Disasters Nationwide in November 2024," indicating that the natural disasters China faced in November were mainly typhoons, along with varying degrees of floods, geological disasters, low temperatures and snow disasters, earthquakes, and forest fires.
This report mentioned that in November, the southeastern coast was affected by typhoons, with local sea water backflow occurring. There were a total of 4 typhoons generated in the Northwest Pacific and South China Sea, 2 more than the same period in previous years, with none making landfall in China. Among them, Typhoon Kong-Rey, generated at the end of October, brought strong rainfall to the central and eastern parts of Zhejiang, Shanghai, southeastern Jiangsu, and other areas, causing different degrees of disaster to 425,000 people in the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangsu, and Shanghai.
Statistics show that in November, various natural disasters affected 486,000 people to different extents across China, resulting in 4 deaths, emergency resettlement of 61,000 people, the collapse and damage of over 100 houses, and an affected crop area of 5.74 hectares. The total direct economic loss was 760 million yuan.
The Ministry of Emergency Management also pointed out that in November, the average precipitation in China was 21.2 mm, which was 5% more than the same period in previous years; however, the total runoff volume of major rivers nationwide was nearly 40% less compared to the same period in previous years. Currently, the Yellow River has entered a crucial period for river sealing, and overall, it remains stable. As temperatures continue to drop, the Ministry of Water Resources will closely monitor developments to ensure safety.
In addition, low temperatures and snow disasters affected five provinces and regions, including Yunnan, Liaoning, and Xinjiang, to varying degrees; cold air and severe convective weather caused strong winds and hail in parts of the southwest and northwest, with Yunnan, Guizhou, and many areas in Gansu affected.
