(Borneo Bulletin, Bandar Seri Begawan, 23rd)—The “2025 Student Excellence Award Presentation Ceremony,” co-organized by Brunei’s Ministry of Education and Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE), was grandly held at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) main auditorium on the 18th. A total of 176 outstanding students from public, private, and international schools across the country gathered to share this glorious moment. Among them, Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) Brunei stood out remarkably, with 9 graduating high school students and 12 graduating primary students emerging from the crowd, successfully claiming this prestigious honor.
This annual event aims to recognize students with outstanding performance in public examinations and to encourage them to continue pursuing academic excellence. At the same time, the Ministry of Education took the opportunity to thank parents, guardians, and educators for their support and contributions to the students’ achievements.
On the day, CHMS Advisor Madam Kho Yue Lan, Acting Principal Ms. Tu Xiuying, and Assistant Principal Ms. Tan Meidian were present with the award-winning students and their parents as invited guests, bearing witness to this unforgettable moment together.

In this ceremony representing the highest academic honors in Brunei, CHMS Brunei delivered an outstanding performance. Nine students, by virtue of their remarkable results in the 2025 Cambridge GCE O Level and IGCSE examinations, swept multiple major awards including “Top in the World” and “Top in the Country,” setting a historic record for the school and becoming the highlight of the event.
Among the winning students, CHMS graduate Hong Zhengui (Hung Chen Kwei) was particularly remarkable, almost sweeping all of the day’s most important awards:
World's Best: Achieved joint first in Mathematics and made the global Top 10 in Biology, Chemistry, Accounting, Business Studies, and Physics.
Top in Brunei: Secured first place nationally in Geography and Malay, and, with the highest total score in 9 subjects, won both the “Best Across Nine” award and the “Cambridge Outstanding Achievement Award.”

Besides Hong Zhengui, the school’s other four award-winning students equally excelled, demonstrating the school’s strong foundation in cultivating diverse talents:
Qian Huiqi: Achieved joint 7th place globally in Mathematics and received the Cambridge Outstanding Achievement Award.
Hasifah: Achieved joint 4th globally in Mathematics, won first in the country in Religious Studies, and the National Cambridge 7A Best Achievement Award.
Qian Huijia: Took first in the nation for Business Studies, placed 9th globally, and won the National Cambridge 8A Best Achievement Award.
Wen Yifeng: Won the national top award for Combined Science.
It’s worth mentioning that, apart from the above individual award winners, four other graduates—Huang Caiying, Zhan Ziqi, Aini, and Lu Jiaying—also won the 2025 “Brunei-Cambridge Excellent Student Award” thanks to their outstanding comprehensive performance.

Meanwhile, the school’s Primary 6 classes reported further triumphs: All 12 graduating students achieved perfect 5A results in the 2025 Primary School Assessment (PSR), topping the Excellence Awards list. The award-winning students included: Chen Yanzhen, Zhao Jingji, Ling Jinghao, Zeng Xinling, Lin Peiru, Hong Zhengkai, Lin Renjie, Huang Yiwei, Shen Yixin, Lin Fakai, Liu Yawen, and Hong Yawen.
Minister of Education, Datin Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Romaizah, officiated as the guest of honor and presented the awards. She stated that the award is not only the highest recognition of the students’ hard work, but also an acknowledgement of the teachers’ instructional quality and the support from parents.
The Minister emphasized that the achievements of these outstanding students will provide strong leadership and intellectual support for Brunei’s realization of its “Vision 2035.”
CHMS Brunei warmly congratulated its students for these remarkable accomplishments. The school stated that the success of these five students in the globally competitive Cambridge system fully demonstrates its holistic educational philosophy of “moral, intellectual, physical, social, and aesthetic development.” The school will continue to uphold its fine tradition, inspiring more students to pursue excellence and cultivate future pillars for the country and society.
