(Bandar Seri Begawan, 5th) The Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call on May 3rd in the morning, reporting a drowning incident in the Brunei River area opposite the Forestry Department Bridge in Kampong Sungai Besar.
Under the leadership of Assistant Fire Officer Norazli and Fire Officer Firdaus, a team of 12 members from Sungai Kebun and Barracca Fire Stations swiftly rushed to the scene, carrying two boats and a diving machine.
Two divers immediately began searching in water approximately 7 feet deep. According to information provided by the family, the victim may have fallen into the water while fishing.
The search and rescue operation was conducted within a 2-kilometer radius, covering multiple areas. This included non-diving searches using “asree” diving equipment, the establishment of a Tactical Command Post (TCP), and aerial surveillance support provided by the Royal Brunei Air Force using an unmanned aerial system (UAS). The operation lasted 8 hours on the first day.
Preliminary investigations showed that the person who drowned was a 57-year-old local man, believed to have fallen into the water in the area while fishing. He was last seen wearing a green long-sleeved shirt and dark gray long pants.
Early this morning, the victim’s body was found by members of the public near the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge and was subsequently handed over to the Fire and Rescue Department, who then sent it to the Royal Brunei Police Force for further processing.
Agencies involved in the operation included the Royal Brunei Police Force, Marine Police, Brunei Maritime and Port Authority, Royal Brunei Air Force, and Emergency Medical Ambulance Service.
The department urges the public to exercise caution when engaging in water activities and to take safety measures to prevent accidents.
