(Bangkok, 26th) Thailand's new Prime Minister Anutin plans to dissolve parliament by the end of January next year, with elections to be held in March or early April.
Serving concurrently as Minister of the Interior, Anutin held a press conference on Wednesday night (September 24) after the new cabinet’s swearing-in ceremony. He said that the cabinet held its first meeting that day and decided to send a letter to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, requesting that the government’s policy statement be submitted next Monday (29th).
According to an agreement previously reached to secure the support of the largest opposition party, the People's Party, in forming a new government, Anutin will dissolve the House of Representatives within four months after delivering the policy statement, which is expected to be at the end of January next year.
Anutin said the new government will also fulfill its promise to convene a constitutional drafting assembly and hold a national referendum to formulate a new constitution. The referendum will be held on the same day as the upcoming election.
He emphasized that the current government's priority is to address economic issues, focusing on reducing transportation and energy prices, as well as restarting the "One Person, One Half" consumption subsidy program to alleviate the cost of living. These policies are aimed at winning more support for Anutin and his Bhumjaithai Party in the upcoming election.
Regarding the border dispute with Cambodia, Anutin said the government will use both military and diplomatic means to safeguard national sovereignty and the interests of the Thai people.
The government will also focus on cracking down on drug trafficking, gambling, and scam centers. He stressed that the new government will not seek the legalization of casinos or online gambling.
