(Bandar Seri Begawan, 9th) A 60-year-old Malaysian Chinese man was fined 13,000 Brunei dollars by the Magistrate's Court on March 25 this year for entering Brunei without declaring 207,000 Ringgit in cash. If unable to pay the fine, he will face nine months in prison.
The local English newspaper reported that the incident occurred around 3:15 pm on March 6, 2023, when a man surnamed Liu (phonetic) drove a black car from Miri, Sarawak into Brunei. At the time, officers from the Narcotics Control Bureau and the Customs Bureau were conducting a joint inspection, and enforcement officers found two black plastic bags containing a total of 207,000 Ringgit in cash in the vehicle's center console and glove compartment.
The defendant admitted his crime and was charged with violating Section 37(2) of the Criminal Asset Recovery Order, 2012, which requires travelers to declare cash exceeding 10,000 Brunei dollars.
The court was informed that investigations revealed the cash belonged to Liu's employer, who instructed him to deliver the money to a Bruneian individual named "Jesse."
Liu works as a carpenter for a company in Malaysia and has no prior criminal record.
