Melbourne Synagogue Suspected Arson: Australian Prime Minister Condemns Atrocity

Australian police reported that a "suspicious" fire occurred at a Melbourne synagogue at dawn on the 6th, which Australian Prime Minister Albanese condemned as an "atrocity."

According to AFP, police stated that the fire caused "significant damage" to the building, with television footage showing firefighters spraying water on the flames through the entrance.

Police said the fire alarm at the Adass Israel Synagogue in the southeastern suburb of Ripponlea in Melbourne sounded at 4:10 AM. No casualties have been reported.

Board member Crane said that at the time of the fire, several worshipers were praying inside the synagogue. He mentioned that the synagogue has increased security measures over the past 12 months due to safety concerns, but did not disclose further details.

Albanese stated that he "unequivocally" condemns this incident.

Through a statement, Albanese said: "Violence, intimidation, and vandalism at religious sites are acts of atrocity... The clear intent of such attacks is to instill fear in the community."

He expressed "zero tolerance" towards anti-Semitism, asserting "Australia absolutely cannot tolerate" anti-Semitism.

He also mentioned that the Australian Federal Police will assist Victoria in the investigation.

"This deliberate illegal attack goes against everything we stand for as Australians and everything we strive for in building our nation."

The war breaking out in Gaza has sparked protests supporting Israel and Palestine in many cities across Australia and around the world.
