Former veteran TVB producer and head of the drama production department, Leung Choi Yuen (affectionately known as 'Uncle Choi'), passed away on the 26th at Shatin Prince of Wales Hospital at the age of 75. Leung graduated from Hong Kong Baptist College's History Department in 1975 and joined TVB the same year, starting as an apprentice scriptwriter and researcher for 'Enjoy Yourself Tonight.' During this time, he briefly worked at Rediffusion Television and Commercial Television. Returning to TVB in 1978, he was involved in the direction and production of classic dramas such as 'Man in the Net' and 'Burning Flame.' In 1980, he was promoted to producer, with his first production being 'Class 4D.' Known for his ability to capture the intricacies of human nature and the pulse of society, the 1988 drama 'Never Say Regret,' which he co-produced with scriptwriter Wai Ka Fai, created a sensation, achieved extremely high viewership, and became a pinnacle of Hong Kong drama. After being promoted to head of the production department in the 1990s, he also planned numerous critically and commercially successful works, including 'Tea Is Thick in the Hometown' and 'Wine Is Rich in the Hometown.'
Upon hearing the news, many artists who had worked with him expressed their condolences and reluctance. Steven Ma said he was shocked and saddened, revealing that he had just contacted Leung in April to arrange to have tea together. He expressed gratitude for Leung’s affection and trust during his time at TVB, saying that Leung often called him 'Team Leader' and deeply respected him. Wayne Lai felt it was a pity that, after being retired for several years, Leung could not enjoy his later years. He recalled Leung’s easygoing nature and kindness, noting that Leung often gave him opportunities in the past.
Elena Kong, speaking hoarsely, said she was extremely saddened and thanked Leung for giving her acting opportunities during his lifetime, frequently casting her in leading roles in 'Triad Boss Under the Line of Fire' and 'Apple-Coloured Alley.' She praised Leung as a kind and fatherly figure. Ruco Chan expressed his gratitude for Leung’s guidance in the past, noting one of his representative works was 'Captain of Destiny.' He mentioned having learned of Leung’s health issues over the past year and had attempted to contact him but refrained for fear of disturbing him, saying he would remember Leung by revisiting their collaborative dramas.
