(Sabah, 23rd) A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the waters off Sabah at 12:57 a.m. on Monday (February 23), but did not pose any tsunami threat.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department issued a statement this morning, stating that the earthquake’s epicenter was located at 7.0°N latitude and 116.4°E longitude, at a depth of 678 kilometers.
The statement indicated that the epicenter was about 49 kilometers west of Kudat, Sabah.
The Meteorological Department pointed out that this was a deep-focus earthquake, with tremors felt in many areas of Sabah. Some regions of Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia also experienced mild shaking.
The authorities emphasized that no tsunami warning has been issued at present, and the public is urged to remain calm and stay updated with the latest official announcements.
