(Bintulu, 5th May) In line with the direction of talent development and academic-industry collaboration, Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOP) at Bintulu recently welcomed a student group from the Faculty of Resource Science and Technology at the University of Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) for an academic industrial visit.
This visit saw participation from over 60 students, led by Associate Professor Dr. Tay Meng Guan. The visiting students and staff were warmly received by SOP’s Controller - Operations, Kiu Kwong Chiang.
The visit itinerary began with a briefing by SOP’s in-house engineer, allowing students to gain an in-depth understanding of the overall workflow and operational insights of the palm oil and edible oil industry. Following this, the students were taken on a guided tour of the refinery's production line, where they actively experienced the entire process of product manufacturing, modeling, and packaging, gaining comprehensive knowledge on how palm oil is transformed into daily consumer products.
Dr. Tay Meng Guan stated that such academic visits help students to go beyond textbook knowledge by providing firsthand experience in the palm oil industry, thereby enhancing the depth and breadth of their learning.
SOP Group expressed its commitment to continue supporting various educational collaboration projects, dedicated to providing practical opportunities for future professionals and fostering a close connection between industry and academia.
