(Saratok, 17th) – A saltwater crocodile estimated to weigh over 300 kilograms was successfully eliminated on the third day of the crocodile population reduction operation in Saratok District.
Saratok District Police Chief Deputy Superintendent Mathew Manggi stated in a press release today that the operations team received a report from residents indicating that one of the baits set on December 14 had been consumed by a crocodile.
He said, on the third day of the operation, around 4 pm, the team discovered a crocodile had taken the bait and swallowed it.
“This is a male saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus), with a total length of 15 feet and an estimated weight between 300 and 400 kilograms. It was successfully hauled ashore,” he said.
He pointed out that the crocodile's carcass was first kept at the operations command center, then handed over to licensed crocodile hunters for recording purposes.
He said, on the first day of the operation, the main tasks were on-site monitoring and counting the number of crocodiles at designated locations.
“Monitoring results showed that it is estimated there are a total of 178 crocodiles at that location.”
“Subsequently, the operations team placed nine baits along the Krian River (Sungai Krian). The operation carried out in Kampung Kupang as well as the monitoring work along the Krian River was jointly conducted by the Saratok District Police Headquarters, Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), and other government agencies to control and address the crocodile population problem,” he said.
The crocodile population reduction operation in Saratok District, which started on December 14, is expected to conclude on the 23rd of this month.
