UK Media: US Issues License Allowing Nvidia to Export H20 Chips to China

The Financial Times reported on the 8th that after Nvidia (HuiDa) CEO Jensen Huang met with President Trump at the White House, the U.S. Department of Commerce began issuing licenses to Nvidia, allowing them to export H20 chips to China.

The British media outlet Financial Times cited U.S. officials, stating that the Bureau of Industry and Security of the Commerce Department, which oversees export controls, has started to issue licenses for H20 chips.

To comply with AI chip export controls implemented during former President Biden's administration, Nvidia designed the H20 chip specifically for the Chinese market.

Last month, the U.S. lifted the ban imposed in April this year that prohibited Nvidia from selling H20 chips to China.

In July, Nvidia said it was applying to the U.S. government to resume sales of the H20 graphics processor to China and had received assurances that a license would be granted soon.

According to the Financial Times, after Jensen Huang visited the White House and directly lobbied Trump, Trump lifted the April restriction, but after the Trump administration made the decision, there was a delay in issuing the license, which left Nvidia frustrated.

The Financial Times, citing insiders, reported that on the 6th of this month, Jensen Huang visited the White House again to meet with Trump, and two days later, the Commerce Department began issuing licenses.

After China raised potential security concerns regarding Nvidia's H20 AI chips, Nvidia stated last month that its products have no "backdoors" that allow for remote access or control.

An Nvidia spokesperson declined to comment, and the U.S. Commerce Department has not yet responded to Reuters’ request for comment.
