Thailand Plans Four Major Action Initiatives to Boost Return of Chinese Tourists

(Bangkok, 4th, Comprehensive Report) In response to this year's sluggish tourism industry, Thai Tourism and Sports Minister Attakorn announced that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) will implement a number of short-term revitalization measures, striving to attract 2 to 3 million Chinese tourists back within four months of the new government taking office, while also consolidating other key source markets, in a full effort to boost overall tourism performance.

At a meeting presided over on the morning of October 2, Attakorn stated that although this year's tourism performance appears somewhat weak, he has drawn up targeted strategies focusing on major country markets within the limited governing period, proactively inviting tourists to return to Thailand. He emphasized: “We must change our mindset. Thailand is no longer the only tourism powerhouse; other countries have also risen and in some aspects may even better meet tourists’ expectations. Therefore, we must welcome tourists from all countries with genuine and open attitudes.”

To achieve this goal, the Tourism Authority of Thailand will adjust its promotion direction, shifting from traditional regional marketing to precisely targeted strategies based on the characteristics of each country, aligning with different tourists’ behaviors and consumption needs, improving the return rate and spending power of visitors, and consolidating Thailand’s position in the international tourism market.

Attakorn pointed out that he and TAT executives have set new, higher-than-previously-predicted targets, and has requested his team to be “daring in setting big goals and courageous in striving for them.” He confirmed that the plan mentioned by Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Thammanat to “attract 2 to 3 million Chinese tourists” is exactly his own proposed target. Although the outside world thinks the challenge is tremendous, he believes that with the cooperation of the government, industry, and international partners, the goal is still achievable.

He revealed that the main markets targeted by the TAT include China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Middle Eastern countries (such as Saudi Arabia), while maintaining stable source markets in Europe and the Americas, such as Northern Europe, Russia, and Poland. Thailand will also continue to promote tourism in secondary cities to disperse tourist flows and enhance overall attractiveness.

It is reported that the Thai government has launched the “Big Impact, Act Fast” four major action initiatives, which specifically include targeting overseas markets, setting challenging goals within four months, prioritizing focus on China, Japan, South Korea, India, and Middle Eastern markets (such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates), especially rolling out special tourism promotion plans for Chinese tourists and deepening China-Thailand cooperation.

Comprehensively enhancing tourist safety assurance, with a 24-hour tourist police hotline 1155 and “Thailand Tourist Police” mobile app supporting eight languages, offering reporting, information inquiry, and SOS services that cover all major tourist attractions nationwide.

Utilizing AI facial recognition and other technologies to strengthen safety monitoring and expanding “Safe Tourism Zones” publicity to increase the confidence of both Chinese and international tourists.

Integrating resources from various sectors to make welcoming preparations for the 33rd Southeast Asian Games held in December. The Tourism Authority will be responsible for event promotion and peripheral tourism marketing, and is calling on all people to be friendly and safe “hosts.”

Attakorn emphasized that tourism remains a crucial pillar of the Thai economy. He stated that the government will, through multi-party collaboration, promote the short-term return of tourists, expand consumption, and further consolidate Thailand’s position as a leading tourism destination in Asia.
