KUCHING, Oct 7: Sarawak is among the six states in Malaysia that have been identified as being at risk of earthquakes.

In a New Straits Times article, Deputy Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Datuk Seri Huang Tiong Sii identified the other five states as Pahang, Terengganu, Perak, Negri Sembilan, and Sabah.
During the Dewan Rakyat sitting, he said studies conducted by the Mineral and Geoscience Department—through active fault mapping and the Malaysian Seismotectonic Map—found fault zones in these states that are vulnerable to seismic activity.

“The Malaysian Seismic Hazard Map, developed by the department in collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), local universities and related technical agencies, is currently being updated,” he said.

He elaborated that the update consists of the latest data, including recent earthquake occurrences, the presence of active faults, geological materials, and soil investigation findings.

He added that MetMalaysia and the department are working closely to monitor seismic activity nationwide to enhance early warning and disaster response systems.

MetMalaysia, he said, will also implement the Earthquake and Tsunami Service Enhancement Project Phase 2 under the 13th Malaysia Plan Rolling Plan 1.
