PLA Surrounds Taiwan in Military Drill, Trump: Not Worried

Published at Dec 30, 2025 10:08 am
U.S. President Trump expressed no concern over the Chinese mainland's military drills around Taiwan.

According to comprehensive foreign media reports, on the 29th, a reporter asked Trump about the Chinese People's Liberation Army's exercises near Taiwan. Trump downplayed this military action, seemingly unconcerned about the possibility of Chinese President Xi Jinping ordering an attack on Taiwan, stating that "they have been conducting naval exercises in that region for 20 years."

Trump said: "I have a good relationship with President Xi. He hasn't mentioned this to me. Of course I've seen it, but he hasn't told me about it, and I don't think he would do such a thing."

When asked if he was worried about the PLA's drills surrounding Taiwan, Trump replied: "No, I'm not worried about anything."

On December 29, the PLA Eastern Theater Command announced that it would conduct the "Justice Mission—2025" military exercise in the Taiwan Strait and surrounding sea and airspace, and previewed live-fire drills to surround Taiwan on the 30th.

According to Bloomberg, Trump has always touted his good relationship with Xi Jinping. After a series of tit-for-tat tariff measures between the U.S. and China rattled global markets, Trump and Xi reached a consensus to ease tensions. Although the world's two largest economies remain at odds over export and regulatory restrictions, Trump is still preparing to visit Beijing in April next year.
