A sudden debris flow occurred in the area bordering mainland China and Nepal, resulting in major casualties and missing persons. Taiwan's official announcement states that there are 51 Taiwanese in Tibet and reminds Taiwanese in the mainland to pay attention to their own safety.
On Wednesday, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) of Taiwan said in a news release on its official website that the MAC, on behalf of the government, expressed condolences to the relevant authorities in mainland China.
The MAC also stated that, according to the latest review of the travel dynamic registration system for mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao, there are currently 51 Taiwanese in Tibet. It reminded Taiwanese traveling to Tibet that if they are trapped locally or have suffered casualties, they should immediately contact the SEF emergency service hotline.
On the Chinese side of the Tibet-Nepal border along the Himalayan mountain range, a massive mass of debris collapsed and fell into a river on Wednesday, causing catastrophic flooding on the Nepalese side and resulting in hundreds of deaths or missing persons.
According to surveillance footage from the Chinese side, sand, gravel, and floodwaters destroyed buildings and vehicles and took many lives, while many people were fleeing before the disaster struck. The cause of the debris flow is not yet clear, but the German Research Centre for Geosciences indicated that a 4.4-magnitude earthquake had occurred nearby.
