(Miri, 16th) Sarawak Minister of Transport and Senadin assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin stated that Pei Min Independent School is the first Chinese independent secondary school in Miri. Over the past 65 years, it has not only nurtured generations of students but also witnessed the journey of Chinese education in Miri.
Lee Kim Shin first extended congratulations to the Pei Min School Board, principal, teachers, students, parents, and alumni, stating that the school’s founding holds significant historical meaning for Chinese education.
He said that in the early 1960s, Sarawak government and aided schools were unable to admit all primary school graduates, causing some Chinese children to face difficulties in furthering their studies.
At that time, a group of passionate community members in Miri saw the problem and believed that children should not lose the opportunity for education simply because there was no school available after primary graduation. As a result, representatives from multiple Miri Chinese organisations held a joint meeting on February 5, 1961, collaboratively discussing the founding of a private secondary school, and established a provisional Board of Governors—Pei Min Secondary School was founded in this context.
“The founding fathers did not start the school because conditions were favourable, but on the contrary, because educational resources were lacking. Seeing the children's needs, they stepped forward to advance education.”
He pointed out that while celebrating Pei Min’s 65th anniversary, past pioneers who contributed to the school’s Chinese educational mission mustn’t be forgotten, and he expressed gratitude to successive boards, principals, teachers, parents, alumni, and public supporters for their dedication and contributions.

Regarding this year’s school anniversary theme, “Pei Min United in Heart, Inheritance and Innovation,” Lee Kim Shin believes this is highly compatible with the path Pei Min has walked for the past 65 years.
He said the rooting of Chinese education in Sarawak relied on unity. Back then, people from various dialect groups and associations came together for education. Now, it is this generation’s responsibility to continue building quality Chinese education and passing on this spirit.
He stated that the Sarawak government has always valued and supported Chinese education, continuously allocating funds to Chinese schools across Sarawak, including Chinese independent schools, while recognizing the Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) from independent schools.
“Our stance is clear: regardless of the educational background, as long as the student has ability, knowledge, and good character, they are the talent we need.”
He noted that to develop Sarawak’s future, large amounts of talent will be required. With ongoing growth in green economy, digital economy, energy, aviation, and infrastructure, it will eventually need the younger generation to take over.
Therefore, he hopes that while Pei Min upholds Chinese education, it also continues to innovate and move with the times, enabling students to retain cultural roots while equipping themselves with abilities for the future.
Lee Kim Shin also said that the cultural gala is equally a part of education. Through music, dance, and various performances, students not only showcase talents but also learn teamwork and discipline, fostering self-confidence—an important skillset for society in the future.
He encouraged students not only to study diligently, but also to learn more, participate more, and try more. In youth, don’t fear failure—seize opportunities to try bravely, and when there’s a stage, take it with courage.
In addition, he is aware that Pei Min is currently raising development funds for the school’s future, and therefore appeals to alumni, parents, business sectors, and all supporters to continue supporting Pei Min and Chinese education.
“Especially alumni—no matter where you go in the future, never forget your alma mater.”
He said, in the past, the former pioneers endured hardship, contributing money and effort to establish the school, giving the next generation the opportunity for education. Now, those who are able should inherit and pass on this spirit, allowing the flame of Chinese education to continue.
Lee Kim Shin pointed out that the 65th anniversary of Pei Min is not only a milestone worth celebrating, but also a new beginning. He hopes Pei Min continues to hold to its founding aspirations, constantly progressing in inheritance, so that the next generation continues to have access to quality Chinese education.
