Man Accused of Operating Secret Police Station in US Admits to Conspiracy to Act as Unregistered Foreign Agent

A Chinese-American man has been accused of operating a secret police station in Manhattan's Chinatown, New York, assisting China in monitoring dissidents. This man admitted on the 18th to charges of conspiracy to act as an unregistered foreign agent.

According to foreign media reports, the suspect, Chen Jinping (phonetic, 60 years old), admitted in a US court on the 18th that in September 2022, he deleted an online article about the police station representing the Chinese government, stating that he did not register as a foreign agent with the US Department of Justice as required by US law for individuals acting on behalf of other countries.

Chen Jinping will be sentenced on May 30 next year. He could face up to 5 years in prison.

He and co-defendant Lu Jianwang (phonetic) were initially arrested on April 17, 2023. Lu Jianwang pleaded not guilty to the same charges and obstruction of justice.
