(Kuching, 3rd) Datuk Seri Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, pointed out that the 1994 Sarawak Building Ordinance will be amended to provide Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in all public buildings in Sarawak.
He stated that the ordinance will be presented in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly next year, as promised by the Sarawak Attorney General's Office.
He revealed that the AED is a portable life-saving device designed to treat individuals experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
“AEDs have existed for over 20 years, and in developed countries, the device is mandatory, especially in public places. It is time for us to follow suit.”
According to the amended ordinance, the device will be made available in public places, and in both public and private buildings.
He added that in addition to the AEDs, the revised ordinance will bring other changes to address outdated regulations and plan for the future of the state.
“Our building regulations are quite old, and changes have long been outdated. We need not only to keep up with the times but also to plan for 2030 and beyond.”
Datuk Seri Dr. Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, stated during an interview after witnessing the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and the launching of AED equipment by the Rotary Club of Central Kuching and the South Kuching City Council, that besides AEDs, the ordinance revision will also include the introduction of green building standards to meet Sarawak's climate change aspirations.
“We want to have a Green Building Index, and we also hope to incorporate electric vehicle charging infrastructure in future apartments.”
He expressed that by establishing regulations, issues can be systematically addressed, ensuring preparedness for the future.
He suggested placing AED equipment at security posts within gated communities for easier accessibility.
“These devices are not ordinary items. Even if you steal one, who would you sell it to?”
