China Summons Japanese Ambassador Over Taiwan-Related Remarks by Kōichi Takahashi

Published at Nov 14, 2025 11:01 am
On the 13th, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong summoned Japanese Ambassador to China Kenji Kanasugi to make a "stern representation" regarding Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's comments about a "Taiwan emergency." Kenji Kanasugi explained and refuted the Japanese government's position.

According to Nikkei, the two countries' foreign ministries released this news in the early morning of the 14th. Sun Weidong criticized Takahashi's remarks as "suggesting possible military intervention in the Taiwan Strait issue, with extremely negative implications," stressing that it "seriously undermines the political foundation of Sino-Japanese relations and gravely hurts the feelings of the Chinese people; 1.4 billion Chinese people will never agree to this."

Sun Weidong stated that the Taiwan issue is "the core of China's core interests, an untouchable red line and bottom line," and noted that this year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the War of Resistance Against Japan. He "once again urges the Japanese side to deeply reflect on its historical crimes, immediately reconsider and correct its mistakes, and withdraw the adverse remarks."

Kenji Kanasugi stated that Sanae Takaichi's answers were in line with previous government views. He strongly protested that the post made by Chinese Consul General in Osaka, Xue Jian, on X was "extremely inappropriate."

On November 7, Sanae Takaichi stated during a parliamentary session that if China attacks Taiwan with force, and uses force against US troops seeking to protect Taiwan, it "could trigger a situation posing a threat to Japan’s survival."

On November 8, Xue Jian quoted on X a report about Sanae Takaichi's remarks, writing: "That dirty head that recklessly charges forward can only be decisively chopped off."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized at the press conference on the 13th: "The Japanese side must immediately correct and withdraw its adverse remarks, otherwise all consequences shall be borne by the Japanese side."
