Diane Keaton's Life Curtain Call at Age 79

Oscar-winning actress Diane Keaton, famed for her role in The Godfather series and muse in several Woody Allen films, has passed away at age 79. According to exclusive confirmation from People magazine, the legendary actress died in California, USA. A family spokesperson stated that further details have not been disclosed, and friends and relatives request privacy at this time.
Keaton rose to fame in the 1970s thanks to The Godfather series. Her collaborations with Woody Allen and her Oscar-winning performance as Best Actress in 1977's Annie Hall are also memorable milestones. Over her long career, she starred in The First Wives Club, had multiple collaborations with director Nancy Meyers, and appeared in the Book Club series among other works.

Born in Los Angeles in 1946 as Diane Hall, Keaton was the eldest of four children. Her father was a civil engineer and her mother a homemaker. She once told People magazine that her mother actually harbored show-business dreams: "Deep down, I think she wanted to be some kind of performer. She could sing, play piano, and was beautiful. She was always my biggest supporter." Diane began acting in plays in high school, and after graduating in 1964, entered college as a drama major—but soon dropped out and moved to New York to pursue a stage career. Since there was already a "Diane Hall" in the actors' union, she adopted her mother's maiden name "Keaton" as her stage name.
In 1968, she landed an understudy role in the Broadway musical Hair. She later revealed that she developed bulimia at the time, due to the director's demands for weight loss, but said she didn't blame him: "It's a psychological illness. It's not so much the pressure to be thin as it was my own greed and emptiness inside." She recovered after treatment, but candidly admitted bulimia kept her from truly enjoying her time on stage.
Her film debut came in 1970 with Lovers and Other Strangers, but her breakout came with Francis Ford Coppola's epic 1972 masterpiece The Godfather, where she played Al Pacino's girlfriend. The film won the Oscar for Best Picture, and she reprised her role in the sequels The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III.

She also starred with Woody Allen in Play It Again, Sam, Sleeper, and Love and Death. Despite her early fame, she remained insecure about her performances and admitted to never watching her own movies: "I don't like the way I look or sound."
In 1977, she won Best Actress at the Oscars for her role in Annie Hall. The film's signature fashion—vests and wide-legged trousers—came directly from Keaton herself, making her a style icon. Many speculated that the movie was based on her romance with Allen; she only commented: "It's not completely true, but some parts are real." She continued to collaborate with Allen for years, and openly supported him even after allegations from his stepdaughter: "I love him."
In 1996, she teamed up with Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler in The First Wives Club, portraying three women abandoned by their husbands. She admitted to feeling "a bit anxious at times because they were so amazing." Her later works included The Family Stone, Finding Dory, the Book Club series and its sequels, as well as directing documentaries.

Looking back at her life, Keaton always gave the impression of being independent and self-reliant. She once said: "I know nothing, and I haven't learned anything. Growing old doesn’t mean growing wiser. Without acting, I’d probably be an oddball."
She remained unmarried throughout her life. "Today I think that I might be the only woman among my peers who's stayed single all her life, and I'm really happy I never got married. I'm a weirdo. Back in high school, a boy told me: 'Someday you'll make a good wife.' And I thought: 'No, I don’t want to be a wife.'" In 1996 and 2001, she adopted a daughter and a son, respectively. "I didn't want to have kids because of some maternal impulse; it was just a thought I'd had for a long time. So I just did it."
